Dr. Akash Shukla is the Director of the Department of Hepatology at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre. He is a world-renowned expert and a pioneer in the field of vascular liver diseases. He is known for his excellent work in various aspects of liver diseases, especially ascites, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease, Hepatitis B & C and hepatocellular carcinoma treatment.
He has published over 86 original research papers and is known for his expertise in teaching and training Gastroenterologists/ Hepatologists for the last 15 years. His papers have won the Plenary Award at the Asia-Pacific Association for the Study of Liver (APASL) in 2018, the Best Research Paper Award at the Vascular Liver Diseases Group (VALDIG) meeting in Switzerland in 2016 and also a recipient of four National Awards. He has written textbooks on ‘Jaundice’ and ‘Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease’.
He is the first non-European to be nominated to the steering committee of the Vascular Liver Diseases Interest Group, European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), Europe and has written the Asia-Pacific guidelines for the management of Budd-Chiari syndrome. He is also the secretary of the Indian National Association for Study of the Liver (INASL) National Task Force for vascular liver diseases (Budd-Chiari syndrome, Portal vein thrombosis, non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis (NCPF), extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO). He has also been a part of authoring several International and National Disease Management Guidelines for various liver diseases like acute liver failure, acute on chronic liver failure, nutrition in cirrhosis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and NAFLD.
He has worked extensively in the field of transplant and currently holds honorary posts of Joint Director (in-charge) of Regional cum State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO-SOTTO), West and Maharashtra & Joint Secretary of Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC), Mumbai. He is also the state advisory committee member for Group of Ministers on organ donation and transplant. Currently, he has 142 research publications in International and National Journals.
He is Transportation Research Group of India (TRG) member for National viral hepatitis control program, Government of India and steering committee member for the Group of Ministers. He is deeply respected among his peers and is a governing council member of INASL.
