  4. Continuous learning and community awareness

The Department of Neurology conducts regular continuous medical examinations (CMEs) and programs with National & International faculties, as a part of its commitment towards continuous learning and also conducts awareness programs and campaigns to educate general public about the common neurological diseases.

Our Services

The Department of Neurology at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre offers the following services:

  • ‘Stroke Ready Hospital’: Hyperacute management of acute stroke and transient ischemic attack patients with Door to Needle Time (DTN) of 20 to 60 minutes.

Acute stroke treatment can only be provided in the ‘Golden Hours’, which is 4–6 hours from the onset of symptoms. Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital & Research Centre is a Stroke Ready Hospital and follows the international protocol for stroke management. The CT scan facility at the EMS has significantly reduced the DTN time, i.e., the time required from arrival of the patient to administration of clot-bursting drug, a procedure referred to as thrombolysis.

We have successfully achieved a DTN time of 20 to 60 minutes at our hospital. The number needed to treat (NNT) for stroke thrombolysis to save a life or to stabilise a patient is 14. The earlier the drug is administered, the more significantly the NNT is reduced. For every minute wasted or delay in administering the clot-bursting drug, the patient loses 1.9 million neurons and 3.1 weeks of life.

  • Mechanical thrombectomy (clot removal), angioplasty, and stenting of brain arteries.

Approximately 20–30% of patients have large vessel occlusion (LVO) requiring endovascular treatment (EVT). We have a special Angio Suite exclusively dedicated to neuro intervention where EVT can be performed 24/7.

  • The department can perform all major emergency neuro interventions, including aneurysm coiling, carotid stenting, and arteriovenous malformation (AVM) embolisation

  • Neurological conditions like epilepsy

Epilepsy is characterised by recurrent abnormal neuronal activity in the brain cortex. We have a state-of-the-art advanced epilepsy care centre with comprehensive epilepsy clinic run by world-class healthcare experts with latest technologies to diagnose and treat various epileptic conditions. We have an EEG machine – 32 channel & portable EEG with video EEG facility and continuous EEG recording, especially for critical patients.

  • Nerve, neuro-muscular junction, and muscle disorders

Nerve, neuromuscular, and muscle disorders form a major chunk of neurological conditions for which the patients seek the help of a neurologist. Our comprehensive services offer diagnosis and treatment of several nerve, neuromuscular junction, and muscle disorders, including nerve and muscle biopsy.

We have dedicated electrophysiology labs with state-of-the-art equipment, including an EMG-Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) machine and a portable EMG-NCS machine that are managed and operated by experts.

  • Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease

Memory loss affects a large group of older individuals. Many of the neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s require in-depth clinical analysis by experts. We have a comprehensive weekly Memory Clinic to provide specialised medical care for patients afflicted with these diseases.

  • Normal pressure hydrocephalus

Patients consulting for symptoms of walking difficulty, urinary complaints, and memory impairment are sometimes also evaluated for normal pressure hydrocephalus. We perform a thorough clinical evaluation and with the help of an MRI imaging and Gait analysis (conducted in the advanced Gait lab with the assistance of Rehabilitation team), manage and help these patients to lead a relatively independent and ‘fall free’ life.

  • Trigeminal neuralgia treatment

Trigeminal neuralgia is a painful facial condition involving the fifth cranial nerve or the trigeminal nerve. Patients with trigeminal neuralgia mostly require medical help. We perform a detailed clinical analysis of these patients and after appropriate neuroimaging, manage this condition with medications. In refractory cases, the neurosurgeon performs a procedure called Radio Frequency Thermo Coagulation (RFTC) of trigeminal ganglion or in a few selected cases, a surgery named Micro Vascular Decompression (MVD) is performed to help these patients.

  • Wilson disease management

Wilson disease is a neurological condition, characterized by excess copper deposition in the brain and liver and can affects individuals of all ages. We evaluate, treat, and closely monitor these patients, so that they can lead a healthy and normal life with continuous treatment. We manage these patients with the assistance from our dedicated team from the Department of Hepatology.

  • Brain tumour management

Brain tumour management depends on various factors such as the size, location and grade of tumour, and patient’s age and overall health. The available treatment options include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and supportive care.

  • Management of neuro trauma
  • Botulinum toxin treatment for movement disorders

The botulinum toxin therapy is an important armamentarium to treat various movement disorders. This therapy is available at our daily outpatient services and in the Movement Disorders and Botulinum Toxin Therapy Clinic.

  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

Deep brain stimulation is an elective surgical procedure, in which electrodes are implanted into certain areas of the brain to pass electronic impulses. At our department, we use this procedure to adjust the chemical imbalances within the brain that occur due to Parkinsonism and other diseases.

  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (repetitive TMS (rTMS) /dTMS)

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique used for modulating brain activation Since its introduction three decades ago, TMS has been increasingly used for managing several neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Very few centres in India offer this service, and our centre is possibly the first one in Mumbai to provide transcranial magnetic stimulation services for patients who require it.

  • Patient evaluation:
    • For movement disorders treatment
    • For epilepsy surgery

Approximately 20–30% of patients with epilepsy do not get better with multiple anti-convulsant medications. Patients are evaluated for epilepsy surgery after a thorough evaluation, and for selected patients, our centre offers globally renowned epilepsy surgery options.
