Distinguished career spanning 40 years with a special interest in Stroke, Dementia, and Neurocritical Care
Dr. Arun B. Shah is the Director and postgraduate teacher at the Department of Neurosciences at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre. Dr. Shah also leads the Comprehensive Stroke Centre and offers holistic care to patients consulting at Multiple Sclerosis and Memory Clinics.
Dr. Shah graduated with M.B.B.S. from the prestigious Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai in 1972. He was awarded several gold medals from the University of Bombay for securing the first rank (October 1972). Later on, he pursued M.D. in Internal Medicine and DM Neurology at the same institution.
After his training, he completed a fellowship in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke at the Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, USA, where he also served as an Instructor in Neurology. He participated in various research projects involving acute stroke therapy and investigated the role of platelet activation in different subtypes of ischemic stroke. This work was presented at the International Conference on Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease in 1984.
Dr. Shah was the first neurologist in Mumbai to use reperfusion therapy for acute stroke in 2002. He presented his data on ‘Thrombolytic Therapy of Acute Stroke in India’ at the World Congress of Neurology meeting held in Sydney, Australia in 2006. He is actively involved in clinical research pertaining to stroke, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease and has delivered several lectures on these topics.
Dr. Shah has served as the Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology and currently holds the title of Emeritus Professor at the Department of Neurology at Topiwala National Medical College & Nair Hospital, Mumbai.
He is a member of various international and national professional societies, including the American Academy of Neurology, World Stroke Organization, World Federation of Neurology, Neurocritical Care Society, Indian Academy of Neurology, Neurological Society of India, and Indian Epilepsy Society.
