Dr. Kalarickal graduated from Government Medical College, Kottayam. Thereafter, he received his MD (General Medicine) from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, and DM (Cardiology) from Madras Medical College, Chennai. He later worked at Medistra Hospital (Jakarta) and Royal Hospital (Muscat) before moving his practice to the US, where he trained under Dr. Andreas Gruentzig (‘the father of Coronary Angioplasty’).
Dr. Kalarickal resumed his practice in India in 1985. He has performed 10,000+ angioplasties and is considered the ‘father of Angioplasty in India’. He is the first Indian cardiologist to use drug-eluting bio-absorbable stents. He has also trained numerous cardiologists across Asia.
Dr. Kalarickal is the founder-convenor of the National Angioplasty Registry of India. He has held the positions of President - Asian-Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology (1995–97) and Chairman - Interventional Cardiology, Asian-Pacific Society of Cardiology (1995–99).
Dr. Kalarickal is the recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award in Interventional Cardiology (1996), Padmashree in 1999, Doctor of Science Award (Dr. M.G.R. University) in 2003 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
