Dr. Rao was one of the earliest urologists to perform laparoscopies in India. He trained in Robotic Surgery at Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH), Nadiad and USC, Los Angeles, California. He has been a faculty member at MPUH, Nadiad and the Jayramdas Patel Academic Centre since 2010. He was recently conferred with an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow for his contributions to the field of urology.
He is the Director and Head of the Department of Urology at the Global Hospital in Mumbai. He is also associated with Mamata Hospital and Dombivli and Jupiter Hospital in Thane. He was appointed as Honorary Urologist at the KEM Hospital, Mumbai, for training residents in laparoscopy. He is a Faculty Director at ceMAST, a training centre for Minimal Access Surgery in Mumbai.
He performed the initial clinical trial for the LMA Stonebreaker. He performed the first ever Single Port Nephrectomy using the R-Port (May 2007). He was also involved with the initial trials of the BackStop device; he initiated the first successful Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy Programme in Mumbai at Global Hospital.
He has been invited to perform live surgeries and give lectures in Japan, South Korea, Germany, Venezuela, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, U.S.A., and Singapore. He has more than 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has been a guest editor of the Indian Journal of Urology. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Endourology and has authored chapters in various books, including the latest edition of Smith’s Textbook of Endourology.
