Andrological microsurgery

Dr. Rupin Shah is one of the most senior andrologists in India. After completing his super-specialisation (M.Ch.) in Urology (1986), he received training in andrological microsurgery (Belgium), becoming the first Indian urologist to do so. Ever since, he has pioneered microsurgery and other procedures for the treatment of male infertility and erectile dysfunction in India.
Dr. Shah has developed several new techniques and procedures in andrology. His work on penile revascularisation for erectile dysfunction was received the ‘Best Video’ award at the 6th World meeting on Impotence in Singapore in 1994. The Shah Indian penile prosthesis developed by him is the most commonly used penile implant in India. His innovative technique for the microsurgical repair of obstructive azoospermia received the ‘Best Video’ award from the Urological Society of India in 2000; his new technique for sperm retrieval in men with non-obstructive azoospermia was presented at the annual meeting of the American Urology Association in 2004.
For his pioneering role in developing novel andrological procedures in India, he received the prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy Award from the President of India (2008). Currently, he is the convener for post-doctoral FNB in Andrology of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. He has published numerous papers, chapters, and books, and holds many important academic positions. Dr. Shah is the founding President of the South Asian Society for Sexual Medicine, senior advisor to the Global Andrology Forum, and Associate Editor of the journal “Fertility and Reproduction”; he is also a member of several global committees of the International Society of Sexual Medicine.
Apart from his association with the IVF department of the Well Women’s Centre of the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, he is a senior consultant at the Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre and a visiting consultant at the Fakih IVF centre in Dubai.
