Dr. Sewanti Limaye, the Director of Medical & Precision Oncology at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, is a pioneer in precision oncology. She is a trailblazer in establishing advanced cancer care protocols, having launched one of the country's first precision oncology clinics under the leadership of a medical oncologist. Under her leadership, the Oncology Clinical and Translational Research program at the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital has reached new heights.
Being a leading expert in her field, Dr. Limaye has a rich professional history of working at top institutions in the United States. She has served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center—New York Presbyterian Hospital, specializing in Thoracic, Head & Neck, and Gastrointestinal Oncology, as well as early drug development. Prior to that, she worked as an attending in medical oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She has also worked at the Phase-I Early Drug Development Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
With such extensive experience, Dr. Limaye has expertise in treating a broad spectrum of solid tumours, including head, neck, breast, lung, GI, GU, and gynaecological cancers. She earned her medical degree with honours from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Bhagalpur, and she completed her residency in internal medicine at New York University. She further pursued a fellowship in haematology and medical oncology at Albert Einstein University in New York. To complement her clinical expertise, she has also earned a Master’s degree in Patient-Orientated Research with a focus on Cancer Genomics and Biostatistics from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.
Dr. Limaye has also actively contributed to impactful research. Her research collaborations include esteemed leaders from renowned institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Columbia University Medical Centre, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), USA. She is also a member of the Ethics Board of the Tata Memorial Hospital. Additionally, she co-founded Iylon Precision Oncology with Dr. Sendurai Mani from MD Anderson Cancer Centre, an international precision oncology initiative, and spearheaded the IMPACT India International Initiative to advance cancer care nationally.
Apart from her extensive clinical and research expertise, Dr. Limaye has led numerous national and international clinical trials and served on Data Safety Monitoring Boards. She has also been instrumental in developing innovative cancer care protocols, mentoring future oncologists, and advancing precision oncology through collaborative initiatives. She was recognised with the John Flynn Young Investigator Award for excellence in clinical research, the Rose and Jack Horowitz Award for excellence in patient care, and the ASCO Medical Oncology Research Excellence Award (2008). Notably, she was nominated to serve as the National Chair for Sub-protocol Arm B of the landmark NCI-MATCH Trial.
